Very efficient air conditioning

For years, it was such an effort just to get myself to the office.

I’ve never liked working in an office environment.

But since this was my only job since I left college, I didn’t have much choice but to get myself inside the commercial HVAC of the office every day. Being in the office was okay to work in during the summer because the HVAC cooling wasn’t so bad. I still had to have a little fan on my desk. Yet, I was miserable in the winter. The HVAC heating just didn’t cover my section of the office at all. To get through the day, I had to wear layers upon layers of clothes and had a space heater under my desk. So when we all got sent home during the pandemic, I was thrilled. I wasn’t going to miss the poor commercial HVAC but I also wasn’t going to miss other stuff. Particularly I was glad to get out of the drama of office politics. There is always some turmoil about this or that. All I wanted to do was shut up and go to work. Going home to my central air conditioning was a great time. I could schedule my day around meetings and still get my work done. I was happier and the quality of my work was significantly improved. I actually raised my job performance and got more done since I wasn’t being bothered all the time. And of course, residential HVAC in my home is far better than the commercial HVAC of the office. I love my schedule, I love my HVAC and I’ll be staying at home.

It’s almost like I could set my watch to it. Twice a year at almost the exact dates, I am just miserable due to allergy symptoms. When all the grass and tree pollen start up in the spring starts the first wave of allergies. That is followed in the fall with another wave of allergies. Pretty much all I could do is stay inside the central air conditioning of my home or the commercial HVAC of the office. But even then, it didn’t make much difference as the pollen was everywhere. But thanks to an addition to our HVAC unit, this past spring and this early fall have been no problem inside my house. I finally have some sanctuary inside of the central air conditioning of my house when it comes to allergy symptoms. The reason for this awesome change was simply adding air purification. The HVAC company installed a whole home air purification system inside the air handler of the HVAC unit. This air purifier is working whenever the HVAC equipment is running. The incoming air passes through the air purifier where it’s then zapped by high intensity ultraviolet light. This results in the pollen being destroyed and removed from the inside air. Of course this goes for all other airborne contaminants as well. The whole home air purification system cleans the air completely. So while I’m free of pollen, we also have the highest possible indoor air quality. And that is such a bonus. The great indoor air quality provides strengthening for our immune, respiratory and overall health. Plus, the house smell like some immeasurably fresh haven.

Seeing a scale that I was standing on read 275 pounds was a shock to be sure.

But it was also perhaps what changed my life for the better.

That is a whole lot of weight unless you’re a huge football player. But years and years of being so sedentary was at the heart of the problem. Going from the commercial HVAC of the office to then sit at home in my recliner in the air conditioning, was a big problem. One simply can’t sit that much and not expect one’s health to deteriorate. So when I weighed in at the doctors so fat, the doctor just looked at me with a puzzled look on her face. Her look basically said what’s it going to take for you to change. I didn’t want to drop dead inside the commercial HVAC of my office. But I was well on my way. The goal was to lose at least 70 lb at first. But it all felt so overwhelming. The first thing I did was to start getting out of the commercial HVAC of the office for lunch. Instead of eating at my desk or getting some sort of fast food garbage, I got out of the air conditioning and went for a walk. Instead of eating a big lunch I simply grazed on healthy food throughout the day. Then once I got home, there was no more happy hour on my recliner in the central air conditioning of a house. Instead, I was up and out of the HVAC for another walk. Surprisingly, it didn’t take too long before I lost enough weight to add resistance training to my exercise program. it’s been a year since that weigh in. And I’ve lost the 70 pounds.

I make it a way of life to save money on anything I can.

And I mean it’s sort of a passion.

Sure, I love saving money but it’s more than that and almost like a treasure hunt now that there is the internet. Yet, that passion got me in a bad way when it came to a recent HVAC upgrade. Because I have such a thing for saving, I got right to work online once the HVAC technician told me the old heat pump was dying. I was hoping I could get another summer of HVAC cooling out of it before I had to replace the heat pump. The HVAC company was great all along the way. I met with an HVAC professional who really help me narrow down a model choice for my residential HVAC equipment. However, while I planned on having them do the HVAC installation, I wanted to go around them when it came to purchasing the HVAC equipment. That was a big mistake. I did find a replacement heat pump online at a very large discount. I snapped it up and I pay the shipping cost to get it to my home. A couple days before the installation date, the HVAC contractor came out to do an inspection. The very first thing he did was have a look at the new heat pump. I could see the color sort of drain out of his face as he turned around to tell me it wouldn’t work. I had purchased a heat pump that was too small for the air volume in my house. It never dawned on me. So much for trying to outsmart the HVAC professionals and buy HVAC equipment at a deep discount.

I’m satisfied and I think I’m a better person for doing it.

Life is for living and the older I got, the more I realized that fact. So, I started making things on my bucket list a reality. Since I was a kid, I always wanted to spend a chunk of winter way up in the woods. I seriously wanted to leave modern heating to live in a one room cabin with a loft and a wood stove for heating. But I wanted to do this alone. I’m not sure what the appeal of this passion was but it was a lifelong dream. I finally got the chance so I took it. Because of the pandemic, I was doing all of my work from the central air conditioning in my house. So I did some checking into it and was able to find a cabin that fit just what I was looking for. It came with a satellite dish so I could work online while still making it a bit of a sabbatical. This way, I could stay plugged into business a bit and be available to my colleagues without being in the office or working a ton of hours. My priority was to just live, ponder things, write stuff down, chop firewood and be quiet. Truthfully, that experience was everything I thought it could be and more. I’m satisfied and I think I’m a better person for doing it. However, I did missed my gas furnace at home. While I enjoyed the wood stove, the gas furnace is a much more convenient way to go. I doubt I’ll go another 10 weeks without modern residential HVAC but at least I know I can.

We had seen this house in a part of town where we liked to walk for more than 10 years.

And each time we saw it, I think we fell just a little bit more in love with it.

So trying to be healthy by walking not only helped our waistline but it got us this house. For years, it was evident that the house was abandoned. There wasn’t a heat pump running and it just looked sort of run down. Later on, we learned this house had been tied up in Probate Court. As soon as the for sale by owner sign went up, we jumped on it. This house sort of ended up as a passion for my wife and I. The one of a kind design is what really attracted us to this house. Prior to moving in, we’ve done plenty of research in order to know what we wanted to do. Once it was ours, the renovations were ready to proceed. Actually, it was so good that we had that game plan already laid out. This house was designed during a period when residential HVAC had yet to become available. Originally, there was a big boiler in the basement that provided radiant heating. When we got the house, there had been an attempt at central air conditioning that was a horrible. We wanted to bring this place back to its original glory and be true to the unique design. We also had to have modern residential HVAC. That’s just what we got when we went with the HVAC contractor’s original plan for our heating and cooling. We have a series of ductless heat pumps they do a tremendous job and provide great quality heating and air.

Like I had two air ducts in my bathroom.

Really, the thought of having a home built for me was sort of the ultimate in my mind. Not bad for my first time as a homeowner. I must say that I’m glad to be done with stuff like bad residential HVAC that comes with apartment life. I certainly didn’t like that the HVAC equipment was older than I was and by a lot. Also the heating and cooling equipment was never maintained by an HVAC professional. But I saved my money and used some money that was willed to me by my grandparents to build myself a house. The entire time it was being built, I could hardly believe that this thing was mine. For the first time, I would own my own HVAC equipment and be responsible for the upkeep of an entire house. Right away, I signed up with the local HVAC company to be on their HVAC service plan. For sure, I wasn’t taking any chances and the more prepared I was for homeownership, the better I felt. It was sort of strange because my HVAC was messed up when I finally moved in. It took me more than a week to figure it out. Before the building process I chose from about 10 different floor plans. Evidently, the builder used a different set of floor plans when he hung the ductwork. The air ducts just weren’t in the right places. Like I had two air ducts in my bathroom. But it didn’t take much to remedy that situation. The HVAC company came out along with the builder and it took them about a week to fix. I’m really blown away by the HVAC equipment now because I’m getting the full effect.

I’ve always been a Mama’s Boy but it still took a lot of effort to convince my mom to move.

It just made more sense to get her close as she gets old. I couldn’t simply pick up and move as I had a job and a family. And I really couldn’t do my job except in the commercial HVAC of the office. The only time that didn’t happen was during the pandemic when we all had to work from the central air conditioning at home. But now that we’re back in the commercial HVAC of the office, it wasn’t like I could move to be closer to Mom. My mom’s house is the same place where my sister and I grew up. I’m so very proud of that time of my life even though we didn’t have much. When I was growing up, the house didn’t even have proper residential HVAC. There was a big wood stove for heating during the winter. Yet, the summer was hot and we had one air conditioner in the window to cool the whole house. Having my mom still living in those conditions just wasn’t safe. So I finally was able to talk her into buying condo that’s right around the corner from my family and I. The only thing we really had to address in that condo was the heating and cooling equipment. It was old and the ductwork wasn’t up to snuff either. So the HVAC contractor suggested we install a series of ductless heat pumps. Not only are they great residential HVAC but my mom loves to be able to customize them. But I think the thing she loves the most is having a remote to where she can control the thermostat from anywhere she wants.

It was more than clear that it was high time that we upgraded our heating and cooling equipment. That old HVAC equipment was the very first appliance I ever bought. When we purchase this house, the previous owner was unwilling to replace the outdated heating and cooling equipment. He just didn’t want the hassle. So we were able to negotiate a far better price on the house and that benefited us. However, it was then up to my wife and I to select new residential HVAC. We had to sort of skimp a bit due to our budget. Not completely but just enough to sort of regret the choice of HVAC equipment a little bit. The old HVAC unit did just fine. We’ve always had good heating and Cooling in the house. Not great, but certainly sufficient Heating and cooling. But the old HVAC was not efficient as it cost a lot of money to run. So when the time came for replacing the old HVAC unit, I was actually sort of excited. I had been saving for some time in order to get the sort of HVAC technology that we had skimped on with the old HVAC unit. So we really went for it and now we have just the best residential HVAC I could have ever asked for. There is a smart thermostat along with his zone controlled HVAC. Plus our new residential HVAC is about as efficient as you can find. This move was also an investment in the value of our house. We’re now getting to the point where selling the family home makes sense. So we upgraded that HVAC equipment with that in mind as well.

It was sort of hard for me to come to terms with the fact that our heat pump was dying and something had to be done.

The HVAC technician came out to do the heating maintenance, he told us to expect the heat pump to start slowly failing.

Since it was winter, that wasn’t too big a deal as we don’t need a whole lot of HVAC heating here. But come spring, he told us to watch for air conditioning costs to spike. In our region, many people have HVAC cooling on by mid March. We try to hold off a bit in order to acclimate to the heat. We flipped on the HVAC cooling in mid May. Right away, the HVAC costs went through the roof. That was before the real heat of summer hit. I didn’t feel so good about going into the sort of heat and humidity that we battle here without a good heat pump. My wife was in agreement so we set up an appointment with the HVAC professionals to learn about our options. Actually, it was a very interesting process. I learned a lot about what the heat pump actually does. And there were plenty of models that would work great for our purposes and budget. The HVAC technology advancements we’re huge since the last time we purchased HVAC equipment. Our new HVAC unit is perhaps the most efficient we could find. I also love having a smart thermostat and zone controlled HVAC as well. The smart thermostat really saved us a lot of money this past summer on HVAC cooling cost. But this new residential HVAC is just the best quality heating and air I could have ever imagined.
