Winter prep and HVAC maintenance aren’t so tough

As the we see October is on the way out, I’m also close to completing the winter prep on our house.

That’s just what you have to do this timer of year in this region.

If you’re not prepared for winter around here, winter will make your life really tough. And so, I make sure that my HVAC equipment is ready to go and so is my house. There’s a wood stove with plenty of firewood which acts as both supplemental heat as well as an emergency heating source. There are times where we have so much snow and ice that an HVAC technician even in four wheel drive wouldn’t be able to get to us. If the gas furnace were to go down, there’s a lot of peace of mind knowing that we’ll still be warm in our home. So when October rolls around, I have already cut all the wood for the winter and I’m in the midst of finishing off splitting and stacking it. This is also when I call the HVAC company. They send out an HVAC technician who goes over the gas furnace with a detailed inspection. The HVAC professional replaces worn parts and makes adjustments to ensure that the gas furnace is running at its most efficient. Once that’s completed, I give the house the once over to be sure I’m keeping a good seal on it. That might mean adding a little bit more insulation or replacing some worn weather stripping around entrances. But when the snow and the ice and the long months of winter descend, I’ll be super cozy thanks to my HVAC equipment, wood stove and a tight house.
