After my father passed away, my mother is trying to restructure her life to not only cope with the loss, but also get herself in a situation financially where she can take care of herself.
- This means selling the house she owned with my father & a number of other possessions to downsize enough to fit in a condominium anywhere.
However, my mom naturally had a few things she wanted regardless of where she ended up in the long run. A gas stove & oven were mandatory, even if it required adding the 2 after moving in. Since a gas line hookup isn’t a mere trivial expense, all of us made sure to put it towards the top of her list of requirements. She also wanted to be on the first or minute floor in the event of a power outage making an elevator inactive while I was in an emergency situation. But one bizarre demand on her list was a fireplace. It’s not exactly the easiest thing in the world to find a condominium with a fireplace, but that was until I discovered a bunch of townhomes on the other side of our county. The one that my mom ended up choosing seemed amazing from the start. They have a ground floor & a minute floor with fireplaces on both levels attached to the same chimney. While there is also a normal central oil furnace, it’s nice having a wood heating plan as a supplemental way to sizzling the house if her electricity ever goes out in a Winter storm with sub cold temperatures.
