This smart thermostat is now in complete control of the HVAC cooling in our home. And there is only one person who has the ability to override the new sheriff with the manual thermostat mode and that’s me.

I’m a reasonable person so I always try to look for solutions when there are conflicts.

At work and in my personal life, I do my best to find a common solution to a shared problem.

So when I received the first notice from the HOA about my HVAC equipment, I took that sort of approach. The problem was that my HVAC equipment could just barely be seen from the street if you looked for it. According to the HOA rules, heating and cooling equipment have to be screened from view. I’m not so sure why viewing an HVAC unit on the side of someone’s house is such a big deal. But I conformed to the rule. This spring, I had the hedge that hides the HVAC equipment trimmed back. And it got trimmed back hard. So you can just barely see the HVAC unit on the side of my house. The HOA wanted me to build a privacy fence in front of the privacy hedge. That’s just nonsense of course since the hedge would flesh out eventually. So I tried to deal with the HOA with that sort of common sense approach. They weren’t having any of it and threatened to fine me on a daily basis if I didn’t put up the fence. I knew that I only needed like a couple of months for the hedge to once again screen the HVAC unit. So I kept hedging with the HOA and tried to just slow walk everything. That approach infuriated the HOA guy in charge of enforcement but I bought the time for the hedge to fill back in.

It’s not easy watching someone you love struggle with aging.

That’s exactly what’s going on with my mom.

This lady raised three kids on her own and is so utterly independent that she’s having a hard time now that she needs some help. My mom raised us in the same house she still lives in. We weren’t well off and that house didn’t even have residential HVAC as most of my peers had. It had a wood stove for heating in the winter but no air conditioning. Still, I don’t think it ever bothered me. The house might not have had stuff like residential HVAC but it was always clean and orderly. Plus, it was on some of the most beautiful land you could imagine. My sister stayed put in the region we grew up in and sort of keeps an eye on mom. Recently, she called and asked me to help convince my mom that it’s now time that she let us help her. Mom doesn’t want for much but she’s getting to the point that she can’t physically do the stuff that she once could. So cranking up a wood stove and feeding it firewood isn’t happening like it did. Instead, there are days she’ll just wrap up in a quilt and sit in front of a space heater. This just wouldn’t do so we all sort of had to convince her it was time for some real residential HVAC. I had the HVAC contractor go out to see what would work best. He came back suggesting we go with a series of ductless heat pumps. It turned out that the ductless heat pumps were the perfect answer. It was no hassle as the HVAC professionals were in and out in a day. And now, my mom has some proper heating and cooling in her home.
