My house encompasses a little over 2,500 square feet.
It features high ceilings, big windows and a combination of big open spaces and smaller rooms.
There have been a lot of renovations to the floorplan over the years. When my husband and I first moved in, one thermostat controlled the temperature for the entire residence. If we wanted to adjust the comfort level, we needed to walk to the living room and make a manual change. There was no way to avoid heating or cooling empty rooms. We couldn’t target those rooms that tend to feel overheated in the summer or chilly in the winter. It was necessary to maintain the same temperature in my home gym as the upstairs bedrooms and downstairs living room. We were spending a small fortune on heating and cooling and not overly thrilled with the level of comfort. The furnace, air conditioner and ductwork were extremely old, outdated and inefficient. Although it was a big investment and rather invasive project, we recently replaced the entire system. We had a contractor design and install a new duct system that properly accommodates the modern layout of the home. We chose an Energy Star, high-efficiency furnace and air conditioner combination that feature adaptable-speed technology and wifi connectivity. The best perk of our home improvement project is the addition of zone control. We now have an independent thermostat in each room. We’re able to customize the settings to the usage of the space as well as personal preference. We’re saving quite a bit of money on our monthly utility bills.
