Fortunately, the HVAC professional cleaned up their working space when they were done. I immediately rated the heating company’s services with five stars. The heating industry had grown to great heights. I also upgraded to a smart thermostat from dial-up. That evening, my pet Mr. Pickles and I danced in front of the new TV to celebrate the quality of indoor comfort.

I have to say that I’m really surprised by where we landed for our retirement.

What makes it all the more surprising is the fact that it’s not at all where my wife and I planned to be.

The plan was to move south to all the air conditioning and leave any semblance of winter behind. We even upgraded the residential HVAC in our old house and sold it in anticipation of moving south. We rented an apartment for the final year of my career and were ready to go south to the land of the heat pump. Well, we ended up getting the heat pump but it sure wasn’t where we planned on being. Our daughter gave birth to our first grandchild and we decided to move closer to her in the midwest. And with the money we made from selling our house, we chose to build a house. It was something that we had always wanted to do anyway. We are thrilled to be living here and love our new home. We especially love the residential HVAC. Instead of going the traditional route, we chose to go with a geothermal heat pump. It just made so much more sense all the way around. We definitely wanted the heating and cooling in our home to be sustainable. And even though a geo heat pump comes with higher initial costs, it was worth it in the long run. Not only do I love the radiant floor heating but the cost of HVAC is far less with a geo heat pump. So it all turned out really well and we’re happy right where we are.

We weren’t two weeks into being cooped up inside the central air conditioning of our home before I knew that I needed my own space.

For one, I really didn’t like having to share the air conditioning inside the small home office with my wife.

Much of my work requires a lot concentration and focus. But my wife spends much of her day on the phone talking with clients. Sharing a small space like that can be really challenging. I just couldn’t ever not sort of listen to her conversations which kept me from focusing on my work. But getting a place of my own, where I could actually do some work, was not going to be the easiest thing. Initially, I tried sitting under the HVAC air duct at the kitchen table. It actually worked out just fine while I was at home during the pandemic. And I love it now as it’s a great spot to be quiet or to go out and do some tinkering. My wife finally admitted that this was the best Christmas we’d ever had.

I was the main reason why this holiday season was so different. That’s because I told my wife and her parents that they were welcome inside the central air conditioning of our house for Christmas. But I wasn’t making that trip any longer. My wife and I have now been married for 17 years. We ended up having dogs instead of having kids. That meant we always had to travel to my wife’s parents home for family Christmas. But the last time we were there, my nieces and nephews couldn’t be bothered and we barely saw them. So the idea of leaving wonderful weather down south just wasn’t worth it anymore. Why should I leave an area that doesn’t even need the heat pump to be working to go deal with a serious winter? Plus, my wife’s parents keep their thermostat pegged and the gas furnace on almost constantly. It’s one thing to be in a region where it’s freezing outside. But it’s a whole other thing to have to sweat it out while you’re inside. So I finally just said I was done with the traveling and they were welcome to come here. Surprisingly, they chose to come down and spend Christmas with us and my thermostat setting. But we ended up having just the best time ever. And it only took my wife two weeks to finally admit that this really was the best Christmas ever.

Necessity may indeed be the mother of invention.

• I think that is one of those basic truths in this life.

But necessity can also end up showing you a whole new perspective just when you didn’t expect it. That’s exactly what happened for my wife and during a recent HVAC crisis. This wasn’t something like the gas furnace going out in our home or anything like that. No, both my wife and I decided to retire early and pursue owning rental properties. We both really enjoy the process of taking an older home and turning it into something pretty fantastic. We’ve done this several times in our own lives while we were still working inside the commercial HVAC of corporate America. The more we talked about it, the more it made sense for us to take this opportunity to do what we wanted to do while we still could. At this point we’re up to five properties. Almost all these properties are smaller starter homes that need a lot of work. And in every case thus far, we’ve had to replace the residential HVAC. On our last home, we got a little bit cocky by getting a lease signed prior to all the renovations being done on the house. So we were on the clock with a deadline when we found out the ductwork in the home wasn’t usable. It was very necessary that we found an alternative because we had to have the HVAC equipment upgrade completed immediately. That’s when we learned about the ductless multi-split alternative. We used ductless heat pumps in that situation and we are so pleased with the results, we’re going to do all our homes this way.

All of us had an early work order at the local Tim Hortons Coffee shop last Monday.
