Settling into the drive

I always think it’s funny when I talk to new people about road trips.

Many humans seem to think that a “long” car ride means a 3 hour drive, and I can’t help but chuckle when I compare my regular trips to theirs.

You see, every month or so I endure a car ride that lasts somewhere between 8 and 12 hours. It happens so frequently that this is the norm in my world, but it seems to really freak other people out when they begin to comprehend what that experience would be like. I receive a lot of shocked faces, saying things like “I could never!” In reality, it’s not so bad once you get used to it. The key is getting yourself to just settle into the drive, and to let go of all control of the situation. One of the best ways I’ve found to accomplish this is to have amazing indoor temperature control systems installed on the car. There’s nothing worse than feeling as though you cannot get the right air temperature or humidity level in place while you’re trapped in a tiny box. It’s very demoralizing and anxiety inducing to be continually hot or cold. I also find that my respiratory health is deeply affected by the quality of my air temperature control devices, since all of my breathing air is being passed through a series of fans and air filters. If these measures are not well maintained, my lungs and I notice immediately. Sure, it costs a little money to service your vehicle’s heating and cooling system, but it is worth it in the long run if you’re going to be spending a lot of time there.
