Offering a drink

It is an established fact that a good education gives one a much better chance of doing well in life. Yet, based on what I have noticed, it is as though this fact has escaped the notice of the authorities holding the purse strings. With their level of education, they ought to know that children require facilities which are conducive to learning, to be able to do their best. Apparently, they do not.

My son is a bright enough kid, definitely above average where his school work is concerned. For weeks now his work has been declining and he tries to find every possible excuse to skip school. This is not normal behaviour for him so I contacted his school. It turns out that their HVAC unit has quit. It had been on its last leg for ages and had finally croaked. There is no HVAC back-up plan so mobile fans were being used to cool the classrooms. Though they may have made a slight difference, no way could one or two little fans supply the air quality that a functioning HVAC system can. There aren’t even ceiling fans in the classrooms, so the kids are not too comfortable.

A special P.T.A. meeting was called to discuss the matter, and almost every parent turned up. Several suggestions were aired, but the most popular one seemed to be that each parent contribute a certain amount of money, which would go towards replacing the old HVAC unit. I know one parent who is very unwilling to be involved in that.  What about the taxes I pay? What is it used for?
